Thanks, Maryann, for the reply. You're right, our hotel was a bit $$$. This was our first time in Barcelona and we really didn't know where to stay. Because the hotel was on the Ramblas we thought it was in a good location. When we go back to Barcelona (and we will in a heart beat) we'll most likely select another hotel. Thanks for reading. We stayed at the Hotel Principal (www.hotelprincipal.es) about a block and a half off Las Ramblas on the El Raval (grittier) side. It was clean, comfortable, friendly, with free wifi, a compfortable balcony in our room and a generous breakfast, and I actually liked the neighborhood. I thought it was a bit overpriced for what we got, but the weekend we were there, there was a music festival underway in town and rooms seemed tight. Also, I see that it cost about half of what Hotel 1898 charges and is just a couple blocks away, so maybe it wasn't so very overpriced. I won't be posting much more on this blog, because this trip is over; I'm now preparing for my next adventure! Maryann

I've just started reading your blog concerning your RTW trip. What a great read....I read the article about the trip in the Star Ledger's travel section and I just had to read more. My husband and I went to Barcelona in 2008 and fell in love with the city. I was reading about the various hotels/resorts you stayed in but I couldn't find one for Barcelona. When we were there we stayed in the Hotel 1898. Where did you finally end up? Speaking of hotels, it was a great idea to post your lodgings. It's always nice to get a picture of the whole trip.
Perhaps, some day, we'll do a RTW trip. After reading your blogs and article it's put an idea in our heads.

It seems like you had to fly about every third day, yes? I'm exhausted just thinking about it. But it's great that you really went round the world (almost) in a straight line. Very cool.

I also like the "no $10-a-night hostels" rule. The older we get, the more we like a good hot shower, I think.

We used OneWorld's Global Explorer ticket, 3 continents. Currently they're quoting that at Economy, USD 3,510; Business, USD 7,740; First USD 10,440. (I also comparison-shopped some consolidators, but this is what worked for us.) I have hesitated to add up the entire cost of the trip; that could just be a real buzz kill. But hotels averaged about $100 a night (if you disregard a couple real splurges). Food was not a big expense (again, disregarding a splurge for our anniversary.) Some transit costs began to add up. For instance, it costs about $100 for a driver from the Amman airport to Petra. A bus would have been significantly cheaper, but didn't work with our schedule. Maryann

We stayed in a place called Hostal Cruz Sol, which I can recommend. The location simply couldn't be better--it's on a cute plaza, just two minutes from Plaza Mayor. (www.hostalcruzsol.com). Rooms were small and simple but clean, with ample hot water. At height of summer, we paid 58 euros a night. This time of year, it's less. It's on the third floor of a building, with non-existent signage, which is a tiny bit weird, but our cab driver had no problem at all finding it.

The staff generally spoke Spanish, not English. They directed us to a laundromat about a 5 minute walk away. Looking at a map of Madrid, it appears it was on Calle de Leon, between Las Huertas and Prado. Maryann

Nice trip.

Too bad Americans don't get many vacations days, two weeks if your lucky. You would see a lot more people traveling on longer trips if we did. I lived in Europe for a couple of years and they all get a month to start out, 8+ weeks after working a while.

Great photos. I appreciate the fact that you both did it in a month and are "grown" folks. Round the world travel is for anyone who wants to do it, not just freshly minted college grads.
